“It doesn’t seem as if policymakers are listening to the people on the ground who have experience in doing this," says addiction physician Dr. Lori Regenstreif.
The crusaders of the "safe supply" ideology continue to insulate their vision because it is inextricably intertwined with the virtues and egos of those who follow and believe it. Opposing arguments on drug policy are currently substituted by assumptions that have been so widely accepted that any further criticism passes without scrutiny
Safe supply = unsafe supply bleeding out to the most vulnerable in our society, harm reduction = harm creation. The only thing that will stop this madness is if someone takes leadership and starts to get these people off the streets and into safe hospitals…. We would never allow this if it was anything else, covid shut down the entire world. Addiction is killing more people than the covid virus ever did!! I’m heartbroken and angry that the voted leaders of our country continues to allow this abuse of people who do not have the capacity to stop…. What a horrible society to live in when they allow these suffering, sick, addicted people - where is our compassion!!!!
In Vancouver it is well documented that that dilaudid is making its way into the hands of teenagers and thus making them addicts. The problem is that the kids think that it is a safe party drug - no it is more potent that OxyContin. Instead of the messaging "drugs will kill you" the gov't and chief medical officers continue to tout "safe supply" as the holy grail to get addicts clean. Unfortunately if you know addicts they will not get clean until they want to get clean and then one rehab will not do it and when they do get clean they realize staying clean is a life long battle...don't do drugs.
